“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” – Maya Angelou

Growing up as a competitive soccer player, I was always looking for ways to improve as an athlete. But as a teenager, that quickly turned into searching for ways to “look better.” As a female athlete, I was terrified of being “too muscular” or “too bulky.” I can remember being in high school and trying all sorts of juice cleanses and diets to slim down.
When I went to college, I became a group exercise/yoga instructor at the university gym. I loved this job so much and being able to share my love of fitness and yoga with my peers was awesome. But I quickly fell into orthorexic behaviors and patterns. Orthorexia is a type of eating disorder that is defined as a fixation on righteous eating or becoming overly obsessed with maintaining perfect health.
I can even remember skipping out on social activities to exercise. I was so obsessed with being as healthy as possible… that I became incredibly unhealthy.
Not to mention, I was a chronic overachiever taking on way too many responsibilities and putting far too much pressure on myself to maintain a perfect GPA. I was sleep-deprived, chronically fatigued, stressed out, and depressed. I felt so disconnected from myself and I knew something needed to change.
My journey since then has shifted my entire mindset on what it truly means to be healthy.
The summer after my sophomore year in college, I was really depressed. My mom, being the wise woman that she is, gave me a gratitude journal as a gift. This may be the best gift I ever received because I swear that gratitude journal changed my life.
I also found an incredible therapist who incorporated energy healing into her work. She helped me unlock tons of stored emotions and energy trapped in my body through various healing modalities. I couldn’t believe how powerful this was and how much this helped me. This experience showed me the truth behind the mind, body, soul connection.
Through diving deeper into my yoga and meditation practice, going to therapy, and prioritizing a gratitude practice, I was able to completely transform my mindset and my life.
The orthorexic behaviors felt less and less aligned with my true, authentic self. I learned to love myself and finally enjoy life again. As my excitement and gratitude for life increased, all the old patterns and habits seemed to fall away.
I see challenges differently now. I see challenges as a way to learn more about myself and as an opportunity to grow and become stronger.
To this day, I am still obsessed with health and wellness, but it’s a different kind of obsession than it once was. Now, my obsession is driven by pure excitement, passion, and curiosity. I love learning about wellness and spirituality because I love exploring how we can soak up all that life has to offer.
I created Sky Life to explore all of the topics in wellness, spirituality, and lifestyle that I am most curious about and share what I learn along the way.
Sky Life is my dedication and commitment to exploring what it means to live a healthy, happy life from a mind, body, soul perspective.
